The aim is to improve the competitive and technical skills of Teesside’s junior players creating one of the most successful teams in the UK and creating a clear pathway for youngsters interested in the sport.

Teesside already boasts a thriving badminton community with a number of talented youngsters already playing in the region.  The Performance Centre will provide the support necessary to develop the skills of Teesside’s best  players, helping them make the transition to world class status.

The Head Coach for the Performance Centre will be Peter Higman, who will be supported by a team of talented young coaches, who are emerging as a result of the investment in coach education already underway across the region.

Sheila Boyes, the Performance Centre Secretary said: ‘The parents, clubs and supporting organisations involved in this bid are to be congratulated in securing a Performance Centre for Teesside.  Their commitment in working together and obvious desire to succeed has helped secure additional funding and support for the sport of badminton.

I am sure that Teesside’s junior players will take full advantage of this opportunity and I am looking forward to seeing some fantastic players emerging from Teesside – players who are not only highly skilled and winning but who are thoroughly enjoying their sport’.

Organisations involved in this initiative include Teesside Badminton Development Association (TBDA), the Premier Clubs in Teesside, Tees Active Ltd (Thornaby Pavilion – where the centre will be based), Local Authorities, School Sports Partnerships, Tees Active Badminton League (TABL), Tees Valley County Sport Partnership (TVS) and the University of Teesside.
